The development of an organisation's human resources is now widely recognised as a critical component in gaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace. Developing people's capabilities in diverse contexts is thus a vital role played by HR professionals and one that requires research, planning, and skills in the delivery of training courses to groups of employees with diverse and evolving needs. Associated with this, HR professionals are also expected to conduct research into and develop initiatives that will increase an organization's capacity to generate value from the efforts of global and diverse workforces. In light of the evolving field of HRD and HRM this unit therefore seeks to use theory and research as the basis for building students' skills in human resource development and HRM research in global and diverse contexts. The unit will also aim to provide students with an understanding of the strategic contribution that HRD, research into HRM, and effective diversity management can make to profitability and organisational competitiveness.
