Sea Freight Transport JNB257

Introduction

Further developing knowledge of sea freight transport, this unit focuses on competition in the marketplace and its effects on networks. This unit provides students with an understanding of the structure, operation and management of ocean shipping with particular emphasis on the freight-earning segment. It examines the theoretical and practical aspects of containerised shipping in the context of the dynamic international environment. Key topics include freight rate mechanism, container management, consolidation and groupage services, trade blocs and lanes, container shipping services and routings, specialised shipping, and security in container shipping. In addition to the principles underlying ocean shipping, students are familiarised with the operational practices, hardware and software which characterise unitised cargo handling and transport. The role of service providers and the nature of their mutual interactions is an essential component of this unit.
