Students who do not have the necessary prerequisites for this unit should enrol in KRA001, Chemistry Foundation Unit and KMA003, Mathematics Foundation Unit. A chemistry major is recognised by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) as meeting the requirements for Graduate Member (MRACI) provided that either a mathematics or physics unit is also taken at 1st year level in addition to both KRA101 and KRA102. Lab coat and safety glasses are required.
Together with Chemistry 1A, this is a core unit for the Chemistry major, and for Environmental Science, Science, and Biomedical Science students, providing them with the fundamental knowledge and concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Organic Chemistry highlights biological applications and includes an introduction to proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Inorganic Chemistry introduces the coordination chemistry of the transition metals, including the significance of coordination compounds in biology and the environment. Physical Chemistry involves a study of thermochemistry, calorimetry, thermodynamics, oxidation and reduction, batteries, corrosion and kinetics.

Units are offered as On-campus where the majority of teaching will occur at the campus identified. Units offered Off-campus generally have no requirement for attendance at a physical university campus unless the unit has practical or fieldwork components*: the campus indicated for an Off-Campus unit is the one at which teaching is administered from.
*Please read the Unit Introduction in the Course and Unit Handbook for attendance requirements for units offered in Off-campus mode.
* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).
Unit census dates currently displaying for 2017 are indicative and subject to change. Finalised census dates for 2017 will be available from the 1st October 2016.
