Marine Ecology KSM308

In Marine Ecology you will  learn about the fundamental features and processes of marine systems. The  following themes are developed: influences of physical variables at a range of  scales on communities and productivity; ecology of plankton; dynamics of  estuaries, structuring forces of benthic communities and macroalgal habitats;  biogeography of the sea; invasions by introduced species; marine conservation.  Practical classes include fieldwork and the design of field programs. The major  part of the practical component is a high-level research project conducted  during a six-day visit to Maria Island in the mid-semester break over Easter; attendance on the field trip is mandatory for the course.  This incurs an extra charge to students.  Students would find Antarctic Ecology (KSA307), Quantitative Methods in Biology (KSM309)  and Freshwater Ecology (KZA355)  particularly useful additional units.

This unit attracts a levy of $100 per student, which is required to be paid into the School cashier (108081) prior to departure

Units are offered as On-campus where the majority of teaching will occur at the campus identified.  Units offered Off-campus generally have no requirement for attendance at a physical university campus unless the unit has practical or fieldwork components*:  the campus indicated for an Off-Campus unit is the one at which teaching is administered from.

*Please read the Unit Introduction in the Course and Unit Handbook for attendance requirements for units offered in Off-campus mode.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).
