Riawunna Centre for Aboriginal Education's Murina Program is a pathway designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to gain the skills and confidence to commence undergraduate studies and pursue other vocational goals.

The Program offers units that explore people, place and politics using narrative approaches and storytelling to advance study skills, all through a Tasmanian Aboriginal lens.

The Riawunna team provides a range of programs to support students to achieve success according to their goals. The Murina Program is offered on the Sandy Bay, Newnham and Cradle Coast campuses through a blended learning approach whilst incorporating 'On Country' experiences to strengthen knowledge and resilience to give voice and agency.

The Murina course aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in gaining the necessary skills, confidence and knowledge to succeed at undergraduate study. The Murina Program is embedded in a strong Pakana cultural framework and has a rigorous focus on developing a range of academic, research and study skills. Students have the opportunity to enrol in University Preparation Program units as electives to strengthen their transition into further studies.

  • 1 Examine Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, including national perspectives, from pre contact to contemporary times that encompasses people, place, politics and policy.
  • 2 Prepare students for University success in writing, research, critical thinking, communication and Information Technology to understand the breadth of Riawunna and UTAS supports and pathways to achieve success.
  • 3 Recognise the significance of Aboriginal knowledges and connections through country and culture whilst providing opportunities to express and celebrate Aboriginal self and identity through storytelling, yarning and narrative approaches to give voice and agency.
  • 4 Navigate the intersection of Aboriginal and Western Knowledge systems to achieve personal success and buffer against assimilation.
  • In addition to 'in class sessions', the Program incorporates a variety of stimulating initiatives including:

    • Guest Aboriginal speakers and community leaders
    • Range of experiential learning opportunities; hands on learning
    • A major compulsory field trip each Semester
    • Various 'in Country' experiences
    • 'Wrap around' support
