In addition to 'in class sessions', the Program incorporates a variety of stimulating initiatives including:-
- Guest Aboriginal speakers and community leaders
- Range of experiential learning opportunities; hands on learning
- A major compulsory field trip each Semester
- Various 'in Country' experiences
- 'Wrap around' support
Course objectives
The Murina course aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in gaining the necessary skills, confidence and knowledge to succeed at undergraduate study. The Murina Program is embedded in a strong pakana cultural framework and has a rigorous focus on developing a range of academic, research and study skills.
Learning outcomes
- Examine Tasmanian Aboriginal history and culture, including national perspectives, from pre contact to contemporary times that encompasses people, place, politics and policy.
- Prepare students for University success in writing, research, critical thinking, communication and Information Technology to understand the breadth of Riawunna and UTAS supports and pathways to achieve success.
- Recognise the significance of Aboriginal knowledges and connections through country and culture whilst providing opportunities to express and celebrate Aboriginal self and identity through storytelling, yarning and narrative approaches to give voice and agency.
- Navigate the intersection of Aboriginal and Western Knowledge systems to achieve personal success and buffer against assimilation.

Admission Prerequisites
The Murina Course is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, 18 years and over and require good basic literacy and computer skills. All applications are assessed on an individual basis.
