Hobart, Launceston, Cradle Coast

Introduction

This unit focuses on the life, history and culture of Tasmanian Aboriginal people from pre-contact to the 1950's. tunapri ‘In palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines’ means 'to know' and milaythina means 'country'. In the context of this unit students will 'know about country', therefore explore and examine Tasmanian Aboriginal knowledge of people and place. It will examine the consequences of invasion (Frontier Wars) including the black resistance, concluding with the exile and resilience of Community living under the Reserve Act on Cape Barren Island. The unit explores the connections to Culture, Country and Community with expressions of Aboriginal self and identity whilst valuing the knowing and life experiences students bring to the unit.

Students will use journaling, posters, writing pieces, readings, critical reflection peer feedback and kani (talk) as tools to engage in the unit. It will also use experiential learning through ‘on Country’ activities in addition to the academic skills required for successful undergraduate study. This will equip the students to navigate the intersection of Aboriginal and Western Knowledge systems to empower their own voice and agency whilst building confidence and resilience to buffer against assimilation.
