Leadership for University of Tasmania Students-in-schools has been designed to recognise and extend the development of leadership skills of students involved in the University Students-in-Schools program. The program is focused on inspiring upper primary and lower secondary students to consider university as a viable option. Targeting schools in communities with low transition rates to university, the program builds relationships between school students and UTAS students. This unit complements the training provided as part of the program, and encourages deeper understanding and critical reflection on leadership theory and practice, including: building trust and developing relationships, understanding and valuing different contexts, communication, and team leadership. The unit is based on current evidence and theory surrounding aspirational outreach, widening participation and leadership theory.

- Describe and analyse ways in which school students’ backgrounds influence their aspirations and expectations regarding further learning, including an understanding of Australian widening participation policy
- Design and deliver a series of interactive and educationally age appropriate learning sessions to middle school students aimed at building relationships and informing aspirations with regards to understanding pathways to higher education
- Demonstrate individual and team leadership skills by working together with University of Tasmania peer(s) to design and deliver sessions for school students
- Critically reflect on your experience and participation in the USIS program using leadership theory, with a focus on the development of leadership and communication skills
