This course is offered on a part-time basis. All units are delivered primarily off campus (by distance).

The effective governance and management of aged care services is a critical requirement to ensure: safe, high-quality care for vulnerable older Australians; and, the financial viability of organisations.

This course is designed for health care professionals looking to develop skills in effective leadership, governance and management of aged care services. Your studies will cover a range of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards. Key assessments will test your ability to critically assess the knowledge, structures and systems required to effectively govern, organise and manage residential aged care organisations. You will also learn to identify, monitor and improve key elements of organisational functioning, within complex health networks.

The Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Aged Care), developed and delivered by the Australian Institute of Health Service Management is available through the College of Business and Economics. It is a part time course, specifically focused on the effective leadership, governance and management of aged care services.

The effective leadership, governance and management of aged care services is a critical requirement to promote safe, high quality care for vulnerable older Australians; and, the financial viability of organisations. Accompanying the growth and demand for services over the next decade, is the need for well lead and managed organisations providing high quality care.

The course will critically assess the theoretical and practical knowledge, structures and systems required to effectively govern, lead and manage aged care organisations: residential care or homecare. A review and critique of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards will be undertaken. The processes and activities to identify, monitor and improve key elements of organisational functioning, within complex health networks, will be examined.


Articulation into further study in the Master of Health Service Management is possible on completion of the Graduate Certificate

  • 1 Critically analyse leadership theories and styles in Aged Care contexts.
  • 2 Demonstrate a range of decision making and leadership skills in problem solving, change and conflict management, accounting for and respecting cultural diversity and the needs of healthcare stakeholders.
  • 3 Analyse foundational and contemporary health service management theory, principles and processes, and reflect on their efficacy in current practice.
  • 4 Demonstrate leadership communication on management, motivation, and workplace culture required for effective leadership.

    This course comprises 4 x 12.5 credit point coursework units, to be completed over one or more semesters.

    Entry requirements

    For entry into the Graduate Certificate in Health Service Management (Aged Care), students must meet the following criteria:  

    a) Australian Bachelor Degree or equivalent level standard in any other institution in an unrelated discipline and a minimum of one year relevant work experience in the health sector

    OR

    b) A minimum of five years approved relevant work experience in the health sector or other special circumstances (e.g. post-secondary qualifications) as approved by the Dean or delegated authority.

    Students completing the Graduate Certificate in Aged Care in Health Service Management (Aged Care) will receive advanced standing for four 12.5 credit point units of the Master of Health Service Management.

    Options for this course

    This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the full amount for your studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.

    You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount
