Duration

Duration refers to the minimum and maximum amounts of time in which this course can be completed. It will be affected by whether you choose to study full or part time, noting that some programs are only available part time.

Location

This course may not be available to international students. Please see the list of distance courses (i.e. online and taken outside Australia) that are offered to international students

The University Preparation Program (UPP) is a flexibly delivered enabling program. The course is designed to provide adult learners with academic learning skills and the confidence and personal skills needed to succeed at University. Successful completion of UPP enables students to meet the general admission requirements for undergraduate degree courses offered by the University of Tasmania.

UPP provides an opportunity for students to establish, revise, and upgrade skills relevant to higher education study in the current academic environment.

Cognitive

  1. Apply knowledge of structures and systems to successfully negotiate the university environment
  2. Demonstrate generic skills for academic purposes including academic writing (essays, reports, reflections), research and information management, critical reading, oral presentations and IT
  3. Find, acquire, evaluate, manage and use relevant information in a range of media.

Attitudinal

  1. Apply principles of academic integrity
  2. Behave in a tolerant and inclusive manner

Competence

  1. Identify, evaluate and implement learning strategies to learn independently and cooperatively
  2. Communicate ideas to others in both written and oral forms as appropriate for commencing study in an undergraduate degree
  3. Apply critical thinking skills as appropriate for commencing study in an undergraduate degree

Course structure

The University Preparation Program is equivalent to one year of full-time study but the course can be studied either part-time or full-time. There are 11 units in total offered through UPP, with a full time equivalent load of eight units per year (four per semester). Please refer to the course schedule below for available units.

Please note: some UPP units may be offered in Spring/Summer study periods. These offerings are available to existing UPP students or to those meeting the eligibility requirements - please refer to the Entry Requirements section for details and to individual units for delivery dates.

UPP085 will usually be taken as a core unit, unless you are eligible to enrol in UPP075 as a core unit and wish to undertake both units.
Students wishing to undertake XAB080 must complete UPP075 (either beforehand or concurrently). Students must also contact Pre-degree Programs prior to enrolment in this unit.

UPP Entry Requirements

DOMESTIC APPLICANTS

This course is designed for applicants who do not meet general entry requirements for their chosen degree or who want a more supported or graded introduction to university study.

There are no formal entry requirements for UPP, however all UPP units have required reading and writing standards in line with the Australian Core Skills Framework as follows:

  • Reading Level 3.05
  • Writing Level 3.05

If you are unsure about your current skill level, we can discuss the requirements with you further and help you decide if UPP is the right choice for you.

UPP Spring/Summer school:

To be eligible for UPP Spring or Summer school, you must be either an existing UTAS student or be eligible to commence a Bachelor Degree or Associate Degree. All other UPP applicants must select one of the standard intakes (Semester 1 or Semester 2).

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

This course is not CRICOS registered therefore is not available for International Students.

Students who successfully complete units in the University Preparation Program may be eligible for credit into the Diploma of University Studies.

This course is free to all eligible students.
