This Diploma is designed primarily to serve as an entry pathway to the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) for students who would like to study pharmacy but do not meet the pre-requisite requirements. It includes a mix of disciplinary subjects offered by the School of Medicine, units designed to prepare students for University study offered by the University College, and foundation units to enable students to develop pre-requisite knowledge offered by the College of Science and Engineering.

The Diploma will provide a structured pathway to the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours, progressing students to the point where they will meet the maths and chemistry pre-requisites for the course, as well as providing students with enhanced communication skills and industry-relevant knowledge in over-the-counter medicines.

On completion of the Diploma of Pharmacy Studies graduates will:

  1. Identify opportunities to promote wellness at community and population levels, and undertake socially inclusive health promotion, and preventive health activities.
  2. Communicate and collaborate to optimise health outcomes for individuals and the broader community.
  3. Review and evaluate relevant health information and identify potential solutions to make treatment recommendations appropriate to their level of responsibility.
  4. Be committed to, and proactive in, learning new skills, reviewing new evidence and applying new learning throughout the course and through applied learning experiences.
  5. Identify and use discipline specific knowledge in relevant study areas to underpin professional practice and further study.

Career outcomes

Diploma of Pharmacy graduates would have a range of skills which would enable them to be employed and/or enhance their employability within the primary care sector as pharmacy assistants or pharmacy technicians. The content would complement existing education offered within the pharmacy sector by TAFE and professional bodies.

Students who wish to articulate to the Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours (54A) require KMA003 (or equivalent Year 11/12 maths) as a pre-requisite. Students who do not wish to progress to the 54A or who already meet the maths pre-requisite could opt to enrol in BMA116 to enhance their communication skills. Students who would like to progress to the 54A, but who are not confident with maths, will be encouraged to undertake KMA002 as an intermediate step towards enrolment in KMA003 (54A pre-requisite). In this situation, KMA002 would be completed as part of the Diploma in Semester 2 and students could enrol in KMA003 in the Summer teaching period.
