The course is suited to existing employees within the building and civil construction industries who hold a Cert III in Building & Construction, or a Cert III in Civil Construction, have relevant industry experience, and are looking to upskill into roles with additional functional requirements and higher levels of responsibility. The course is also suited to employees within city councils, utilities and engineering consultancy firms who are looking to develop professional skills in construction project management.
Learning outcomes
1. Apply problem-solving and decision-making methods to design solutions to complex construction project problems.
2. Identify and evaluate continuing professional development and learning needs to monitor personal progress and performance outcomes
3. Analyse and apply contemporary project management methods, regulations, standards and business processes to support the completion of construction projects.
4. Describe and communicate why professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability and an awareness of contemporary construction management practices are vital in project management.
5. Analyse and apply communication methods appropriate to the professional context to elicit, interpret and transmit information and optimise workplace interactions to deliver construction projects.
Practical experience
Experiential learning and portfolio development is key to the Diploma of Construction Management. Approaches to Experiential Education components of each unit introduce the concept of learning through practice, by exposing students to authentic and engaged learning experiences designed to develop their understanding of work and the workplace.
Students are introduced to (i) different methods of and approaches to professional practice, (ii) how issues such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership manifest in the workplace and (iii) the role of reflection and deliberative thinking in developing workplace-based knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations. Students will develop personal responsibility for, and autonomy in, building their portfolio of practice. This is reflected in educational plans developed in consultation with their Experiential Education Coach, the ADAT staff and each student’s employer.
Experiential Education components are based on a range of approaches to practice; for example, projects, case studies and industry workshops. Across all units, assessment tasks are informed by contextualised discipline-based knowledge. The course structure also allows for experiential education to be integrated or interlinked into problem-based learning projects which span four terms of each year (negotiated industry-based projects).

Entry requirements
Entry Requirements
We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
- An ATAR of 40 or above. This is the minimum ATAR needed for your application to be considered; or
- Completed the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (or equivalent) with a minimum of Satisfactory Achievement (SA) in five Level 2 subjects (or higher)
Domestic applicants with higher education study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
- Completed at least two units (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points) of Bachelor level study or four units (equivalent to 50 UTAS credit points) of Associate Degree level study. If you have failed any units, your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; or
- Completed the UTAS Diploma of University Studies or University Preparation Program (UPP); or
- Completed four or more units in the UTAS Diploma of University Studies or UPP with no fail results
Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
- Completed a Certificate III or higher in a related field of study; or
- Completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in any field of study
Domestic applicants with work and life experience
If you have not successfully completed senior secondary, tertiary or TAFE/VET study, but have relevant work and life experience you can complete a personal competency statement. You may be eligible for an offer you have sustained employment background or work and life experiences that demonstrate a capacity to succeed in this course.
If you apply based on your previous work and life experience and your application is not successful, we will work with you to find an alternative pathway into your chosen course of study.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors for special consideration, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition or disability.
We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course.
Further information
We recommend that you submit supporting documentation (e.g. certificates, qualifications, resume etc.) as part of your application. We will attempt to access certain documents on your behalf (e.g. Year 11 and 12 College results or University academic records). Otherwise, you may be contacted to provide additional documentation when your application is reviewed.
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
This course is not available for international students.
Articulation from
Articulating into the Diploma of Construction Management will be in line with the University's standard application for credit process. Please see the Articulation/ Credit webpage for more information. Applications for credit can be made upon application to the course. The maximum credit granted will be in accordance with the limits as stated in Rule 6 Admission, Assessment and Student Progress.
Articulation to
Students who complete the Diploma of Construction Management will receive minimum credit of 25 credit points towards the Associate Degree in Applied Business. Students wishing to articulate from the Diploma of Construction Management into other University of Tasmania courses may gain credit, subject to the receiving College's discretion.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
