This unit considers the fundamentals of strategy analysis, with a focus on the global analysis of industry and competition and analysis of the internal environment. Students will reflect on the need for strategic planning, analysis of the health services environment (internal and external) and lessons on implementation; with additional discussion of organizational capability, deeper treatment of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Examples from real-world health care organizations will be used to elucidate many of the key lessons from the Australian health sector context, and more importantly, look to ways to improve both the quality and alignment of health sector planning. This unit has a particular focus on the Australian tertiary health care system with application to both the public and private sectors. Through your active participation in this unit, you will gain both a theoretical and practical appreciation of the strategic management of health care organisations, which is vital for all senior managers and executive within the health sector.
