Introduction
The goal of this unit is to provide a thorough understanding of key topics in environmental and natural resource economics. While the emphasis is on the economic approach to issues and debates on environmental and resource problems, you are provided with a solid understanding of the key concepts and techniques in economics. The topics include market failures, property rights, pollution control, global commons, management of fish and forest resources, and environmental valuation. Basic economic concepts taught at first year are reviewed and extended to examine topics in environmental and resource economics.
The unit is compulsory in the Economic Foundations Major in the Bachelor of Economics and may be taken as an elective in any other Bachelor of Economics program. The unit is also an elective unit in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Business Management major). The unit may also be taken as part of many other courses within the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics and the University.
The unit fits into the University's major research themes: Environment, Resources & Sustainability; and, Data, Knowledge and Decisions.
