Introduction
You will build on the design skills you developed in ZAE103 Introduction to Equipment Design and the experience in fabrication gained in ZAE105 Introduction to Fabrication, to develop a more detailed understanding of how industrial designs are progressed from initial idea to completed object. Using more advanced features of digital design toolsets (including Augmented and Virtual Reality), you will engage more deeply in design methods and practices by developing more complex design ideas, specify appropriate materials and joins based on knowledge of mechanics, and progressing these through prototyping, evaluation and testing stages to refine your design concepts. Working in a simulated work environment, you will use these skills to consider approaches to innovation by developing an equipment design idea that addresses sustainability through re-use, repurposing and/or recycling of manufactured objects. Through a process of appreciative inquiry (building on strengths) you will also reflect on the complete design process to identify your personal approach to creative and design thinking, critical thinking and pre-emptive problem-solving. This project proposal completed in ZAE202 Manufacturing Project being its implementation here with its Design taking shape ahead of its implementation and commissioning in ZAE205 Fabrication Project and ZAE207 Project Closure and Review.
