Launceston and Cradle Coast students will need to travel to Hobart to attend a 2-day workshop for this unit.
Introduction
In this unit you will develop your understanding of the key attributes of living things, and of the molecular basis of the processes that sustain life. During the unit’s hands-on workshop you will be introduced to a range of practical methods used to study living things, and you will use those methods to complement and extend your understanding of the concepts discussed. Biology experiments and laboratory techniques will be used as a platform for learning how to observe biological phenomena and apply the scientific method and basic descriptive and inferential statistics to address biological questions and to inform decision-making in applied science enterprises.

In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.
You will be introduced to:
- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice
- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios
- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations
- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.
