Due to the circumstances around COVID-19, you will begin your studies online. However, when Government guidelines change, on-campus studies will be reintroduced.

The Bachelor of Music is grounded in the vibrant cultural community that is the University of Tasmania's Conservatorium of Music. Explore music composition, songwriting, performance or music technology across a wide range of styles with the University of Tasmania’s premiere music degree. Combine subjects to increase your music versatility and career opportunities.
Take part in internationally acclaimed festivals such as Mofo and the Festival of Voices, and engage with visiting artists and professional musicians through partnerships with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and other institutions.

Music is about expression and artistry, but it is also about discipline and preparation. Julian moved from Sydney to study his Bachelor of Music at UTAS. In Hobart, he discovered how widely encouraged the arts scene is, met many talented musicians, and began accumulating a large portfolio giving him a range of pathways to pursue.

Learning outcomes

Graduates of the BMus Year 3 (AQF Level 7) will be able to:

Demonstrate facility and a broad understanding of a body of knowledge in one or more areas of music through:
- Practical application of specialist music knowledge; and
- Maintaining a creative and/or scholarly practice with some autonomy, and/or in collaboration with others.
Critically analyse, synthesise and adapt well-developed knowledge and skills, with some intellectual independence, to define and resolve complex problems associated with one or more areas of music.
Contextualise and clearly articulate a broad understanding of their own and others' artistic practice with well-developed knowledge in some areas by:
- Clearly and coherently communicating through a range of modes, relative to context and audience; and
- Synthesising ideas and practice with reference to past and present musical styles.
Undertake creative inquiry using appropriate methods to:
- Present new, improvised, interpreted or re-imagined artistic musical works; and/or
- Plan and execute a piece of original music-related scholarship with some independence.
Exercise self-reflection, judgement and responsibility in developing artistic practice and individual learning, in response to diverse professional, social and/or cultural contexts.

Practical experience

One-on-one tuition

Music students experience one-on-one tuition in many streams and build strong working relationships with staff, students and industry. Be a part of Tasmanian’s intimate and internationally recognised creative community. From 2020, music students will be based in the University of Tasmania's newest building, the Hedberg, this will give students access to some of the worlds most cutting edge spaces and technology, attracting international talent and expertise to the space.

Work placement

Work with festival and industry leaders

Students have the opportunity to take part in internationally acclaimed festivals such as Mona Foma and Festival of Voices. Students, hear from and work with professional musicians through partnerships with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and visiting artists. Many staff still play active roles in the music industry, giving students unique access to our thriving Tasmanian music scene.

Study overseas at one of our partner institutions

Our international exchange program offers opportunities to study at universities around the world, and it counts towards your degree. Exchange can allow you to have an affordable educational and cultural experience in a foreign country for a semester, or a full year. To facilitate this, we offer a range of scholarships and financial assistance. You may also be eligible for OS-HELP Loans or scholarship funding to assist with their airfares, accommodation and other expenses.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Music will total 300 credit points (equivalent of 24 x 12.5cp units) comprising:

Years 1, 2 and 3

A Music Practice major equating to 8 units (100cp): 2 introductory (25cp), 2 intermediate (25cp), and 4 advanced units (50cp)
A Minor: 2 introductory (25cp), 2 intermediate (25cp) units
Degree Core Knowledge comprising: 2 introductory (25cp), 3 intermediate (37.5cp) and 3 advanced (37.5cp) units
Experience and Engagement units: 2 introductory Student Elective units (25cp) and 2 introductory, intermediate or advanced level Student Electives (25cp)

Within the above, in Years 1, 2, and 3 students will need to ensure they meet the overall unit level requirements of:

Introductory level units (100 coded e.g FCA111): 8 minimum and 10 maximum
Intermediate level units (200 coded e.g FCA211): 6 minimum and 10 maximum
Advanced level units (300 coded e.g FCA311): 6 minimum and 10 maximum

The choice in unit levels is available in Experience and Engagement (Student Electives) only.
