Duration refers to the minimum and maximum amounts of time in which this course can be completed. It will be affected by whether you choose to study full or part time, noting that some programs are only available part time.

In 2021 this course is replaced by 42B Associate Degree in Education Support.
The Associate Degree (Education Support) is a two-year course intended to provide an educational qualification for Teacher Aides/School Support Officers/Home Schooling parents.

Students undertaking the Associate Degree (Education Support) will graduate with a qualification informed by core theoretical knowledge.

At the core of the course is a graduate who is educated to:

  • Utilise a reasoned and critical perspective on aspects of education theory and practice
  • Have a capacity to operate inclusively in highly diverse contexts, e.g. educational systems
  • Have curricular and pedagogical competence which would enable the student to contribute effectively to educational and learning contexts
  • Be appropriately collaborative and team focussed on a community of learners
  • Have the capacity to be resilient learners who make evidence-based lifelong contributions to related educational fields, e.g. teacher aides, integration aides, school support officers.

1. Graduates will exhibit broad theoretical and technical knowledge related to paraprofessional work in schools, specifically knowledge of:

  • educational theory and practice
  • the Australian curriculum
  • the role of the paraprofessional in supporting student learning

2. Graduates will demonstrate a broad range of skills pertinent to paraprofessional work in schools, specifically, a capacity to:

  • operate ethically, inclusively and collaboratively in diverse, complex and at times unpredictable learning contexts
  • communicate clearly, coherently and sensitively with students, colleagues, parents/carers
  • use evidence to critically evaluate and reflect upon practice
  • Collaborate effectively with community and industry stakeholders in order to build positive and effective partnerships.

3. Graduates will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills pertinent to paraprofessional work in schools, specifically, through:

  • problem-solving, independently and collectively, to enable optimal learning outcomes for students
  • planning for and supporting the delivery of a differentiated curriculum for individual learners

Career outcomes

Graduates will be highly sought in education careers other than teaching in particular in a classroom setting as Integration Aides, Teacher Aides, and School Support Officers. Graduates will also be highly sought after in the industry training sector, and will be suited to communication-based jobs, public relations and other sectors that value graduates with well-developed problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills.

Entry requirements

Domestic Applicants

We recommend students enrolling in this course undertake at least one day of paid or volunteer work in a classroom setting. If you are providing home schooling we recommend that you are registered with the Home Education Advisory Council to provide home schooling.

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years

To be eligible for an offer, you must have an ATAR of 40 or above. This is the minimum ATAR needed for your application to be considered. Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

All other domestic applicants

To be eligible for an offer, you must have studies or experience equivalent to an ATAR of 40 or above. You can enquire online or advice on your eligibility based on your prior studies and experience.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors for special consideration, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course.

This course is not available to international applicants. International students may consider the following alternative courses:

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
