Not content with winning both the Tasmanian and the national Apprentice of The Year Award, Melanie Ransley is studying a Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) at the University of Tasmania.
The 43F Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) is not on offer for 2023
This course is highly suitable for TAFE teachers seeking to further develop their capabilities and advance their career. It is also suitable for experienced professionals in specialised areas such as construction, fabrication, cooking and hospitality who are seeking to become Technology teachers in the school sector.
You will be required to undertake a number of Professional Experience placements totalling 80 days, mainly in a school context. This will give you the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical skills that you have learnt in a safe and supportive environment.
The Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) is available full or part-time online, and provides advanced standing for students with current and relevant qualifications and experience, reducing the length of the course.
Course objectives
The Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) is a contemporary, flexible and creative response to the demand for a more skilled teaching workforce in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. It offers students the opportunity to integrate theory with practice, recognising existing skills and knowledge of experienced vocational practitioners, whilst facilitating the further development of their teaching practices and professionalism.
The Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) also offers a pathway for those students new to this exciting profession, allowing students to concurrently develop their discipline (subject) expertise whilst studying the other dimensions of teacher education.

Professional Experience Placements
An integral part of your learning in the Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) are Professional Experience placements - putting into active practice the theory and knowledge you have been studying throughout your degree.
As a student you will participate in a minimum of 80 days (16 weeks) of Professional Experience. Placements are usually scheduled as ‘blocks’ of time ranging from 20 to 30 days, and occur mainly in a school setting.
Placements are designed to enable our students to become familiar with a variety of learners and learning environments. Your placements will involve active observation, participation and engagement in teaching and learning activities. For students within the Applied Learning course, the focus is on developing expertise to teach specialised knowledge to a diverse range of learners.
During your placements you will be supervised and managed by a tertiary qualified educator (your Colleague Teacher), and be assessed against Focus Areas within the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
Online students will undertake placements in their own state or territory.

Graduates of Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) are deemed to be qualified to teach in public and private sector schools in all states and territories of Australia by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.
Our graduates work with students in TAFEs, private RTOs, trainers in the defence force, emergency and law enforcement, nursing and hospitality.

If you successfully complete this course, you may be also be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.
Course structure
The Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) requires the completion of 400 credit points comprising:
- 400 credit points of Core units, of which, 150 credit points are awarded as credit.
- 80 days of Professional Experience.
- Completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE).

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)This course is not available to students who have recently completed secondary education. You may consider alternative education courses, including:
- Associate Degree (Education Support)
- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Education (Health & Physical Education)
To be eligible for an offer, you must:
- have completed a course at Associate Degree level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification) in your intended teaching area; and
- have at least four years of industry experience in your intended teaching area; and
- complete the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT). This includes a personal statement and a small number of multiple-choice questions
To be eligible for an offer, you must:
- have completed a Trade Certificate, AQF Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or an equivalent qualification) in your intended teaching area; and
- complete the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT). This includes a personal statement and a small number of multiple-choice questions
This course is not available to students who apply based on work and life experience. You may consider alternative education courses, including:

- Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)
- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Education (Health & Physical Education)
- Bachelor of Education (Science and Mathematics)
You can enquire online for information on interstate and international equivalents to the Tasmanian senior secondary subjects above. If you have not met any of these prerequisites you will need to complete a UTAS foundation unit before you start your course.
Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT)In addition, all applicants are required to provide a non-academic personal statement which is used to assist in the selection of students into all Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses at the University of Tasmania.
This statement is submitted through the Non-Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT) after you have completed your application and is used in conjunction with your ATAR score (or equivalent alternative entry). All applicants must satisfactorily complete the NACAT before they will be provided with an offer into the course.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teaching Education.Prior to undertaking their final Professional Experience placement, Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) students are required to complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teaching Education (LANTITE).
Articulation
This course has been designed as an articulation pathway from TAFE, acknowledging both Cert III equivalent and Cert IV equivalent learning.
Students not wishing to complete the BEd(AL) may exit through the Bachelor of Adult and Applied Learning after 3 years.
Following completion of this course, Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning) degree can advance their Education knowledge with specialised study through either a Postgraduate Coursework or a Research Higher Degree pathway.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
This is a full-fee course, which means you’ll need to pay the full amount for your studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course. However, there are still support options available for eligible students to help you manage the cost of studying this course.
You may be able to fund all or part of your tuition fees by accessing a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government. FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists domestic full-fee students to pay for University, which is repaid through the Australian Tax System once you earn above a repayment threshold. This means you’ll only have to start repaying the loan once you start earning above a specific amount

Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1, open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.
HECS Waiver
Fee waivers waive the student contribution amount payable on a Commonwealth Supported Place. They are sometimes referred to as a HECS Scholarship or HECS wavier.
A Fee Waiver can apply to an individual unit, a semester, a year of study, or the entire degree, dependent on the arrangements agreed to by the University of Tasmania with employers, State government departments, or as offered by the University in specific degree programs.
