The Graduate Diploma of Education is based on principles of active learning and practice-oriented enquiry, informed by professional standards, contemporary theoretical perspectives, and research in teaching and learning. The course is founded on a key value of personal and collective professional responsibility for the improvement of educational outcomes and environments for learning across diverse settings.

The course aims to be relevant and responsive to the needs of people in a range of education-related roles. You will work in collegial ways and communicate effectively across professional settings to initiate and support change in and beyond your immediate spheres of influence.

By the end of the Grad Dip Education, you will be able to apply new professional knowledge and an understanding of key research principles and methods to effect change. You will be able to critically reflect on and investigate practice and apply new ideas in diverse educational contexts.  You will lead processes of individual and/or group critical reflection to improve or transform your current practice, and employ models for enquiry to your work context or specialised area of study.

We recognise that relationships are fundamental to effective teaching and that the past experiences of students contribute to their capacity for learning.  The PG Coursework Program is therefore taught in flexible mode using adult education principles to enable learning in online and face-to-face environments.

  • 1 Explain the theoretical foundations and practice of education (including specialisations), specifically, how theoretical and practice-based knowledge can facilitate developments in educational practice from a global perspective.
  • 2 Synthesise and analyse scholarly literature to evaluate local and international developments in practice and to support the development of project and research planning.
  • 3 Consolidate professional experience, workplace knowledge and contemporary literature to develop creative responses to current educational debates.
  • 4 Communicate complex theoretical concepts in relation to practice-based issues, educational research, policy and current literature across diverse settings to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Course structure

The Graduate Diploma of Education requires the completion of 100 credit points, which may include an optional Specialisation from the course schedule.

When you complete the Graduate Diploma with a specialisation, you'll concentrate half of your course in single area of study. This will be recognised on your academic transcript and testamur upon graduation.

Alternatively, completing without a specialisation gives you more opportunity to complete a broader range of units that fit your individual personal and professional goals.

For assistance tailoring your Graduate Diploma to suit your interests or situation get in touch with a Student Advisor.

In the specialisation pathway you will complete: - a 12.5 credit points Core Option unit and; - a 50 credit point Specialisation and; - 37.5 credit points of Elective units. Your specialisation will consist of its own Core unit (EDP726), which all students will do, plus three units from the Electives available in the specialisation.

The aim of this unit is to engage in action research to reflect on and improve your own practice. Action research is an evidence-based approach to improving teaching practice and in this unit, you will integrate practice, action, theory and…
