Curatorial Studies, 3D Design, Drawing, e-Media, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Public Art and Sculpture. Those interested in Graphic Design are encouraged to consider the Master of Visual Communication.
The Master of Fine Art and Design is a 3-semester full-time or equivalent half-time study program.
Course objectives
The MFAD is a high quality recognised qualification at postgraduate level in a professional practice-oriented coursework program. The course provides a flexibly structured program with the capability of cross-disciplinary, cross-faculty and cross-campus study which allows students, in conjunction with the School, to design a course which best serves their professional needs. Students complete a professional practice project or a series of such projects agreed upon in consultation with the Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator and Supervisor/s. This course allows a great deal of flexibility for students and involves a substantial amount of independent study.
Career outcomes
Graduates of the Master of Fine Art and Design find employment in a variety of positions within the arts professions including studio practice, curatorial work, gallery administration, research and teaching, as well as participating in individual and group-generated projects and studio practice.
Course structure
The applicable course rules are relevant to the year of commencement.
The MFAD course has as its main emphasis a professional practice application of project-based studio work, the content of which is structured by candidates in consultation with their Postgraduate Coursework Coordinator and Supervisor/s. Typically it would be configured as a single overall project, with clearly designated milestones of progress relation to each semester. It could also be made up of three relatively discrete projects that come together as a coordinated submission at the end of the course.
Full-time students undertake 2 x 25point units per semester over 3 semesters from the following: Professional Practices 1A (FSA779) and 1B (FSA781), Professional Practices 2A (FSA782) and 2B (FSA783) and Professional Professional Practices 3A (FSA784) and 3B (FSA785) Professional Placement 1A (FSA708) and 1B(FSA709) or Postgraduate Complementary Project 1A (FSA710) and 1B (FSA711).
Part-time students undertake 1 x 25% units per semester over 6 semesters from the following: Professional Practices 1A (FSA779) and 1B (FSA781), Professional Practices 2A (FSA782) and 2B (FSA783) and Professional Professional Practices 3A (FSA784) and 3B (FSA785) Professional Placement 1A (FSA708) and 1B(FSA709) or Postgraduate Complementary Project 1A (FSA710) and 1B (FSA711).
Students are also given the option of enrolling in approved postgraduate coursework units from another School with a total weight of 50%.
Students are permitted to undertake 2 x 12.5% weight electives from the attached schedule, as approved by the Postgraduate Coordinator, limited to a maximum accumulated weight of 50% in total within the 150% total weighting of the course.
