Study Strategic Communication at the University of Tasmania’s Media School to give you the knowledge and skills required to become an independent and entrepreneurial communicator.

Our new Master of Strategic Communication has been developed to meet the complexity and dynamism of an ever increasingly digital and global communication environment. Jobs requiring communication skills are growing fast with employers demanding advanced analytical skills and professional-level communications expertise.

In response, our degrees offer a unique pathway for students coming from undergraduate study or professional roles in the sciences, arts or business to tailor their education.

Designed for those wanting to promote and implement change across a range of social, environment, political and business settings, these courses will help you to develop advanced analytical skills and professional-level communications expertise to applied ‘real-world’ situations.

Take advantage of the Media School’s strong reputation in Media research and unparallel access to industry partners across Tasmania through a choice of three targeted specialisations: Science Communication, Public Relations or Arts and Cultural Events.

Be taught by leading researchers and lecturers, who possess a broad range of industry experience in a state-of-the-art contemporary Media School supported by equipment and technical know-how.

  1. Critically analyse media texts, practice, industries and audiences from a theoretical perspective, showing advanced awareness of local, national and international contexts.
  2. Communicate effectively and ethically across a variety of media platforms, showing advanced abilities in specific areas of media production and/or the ability to communicate scholarly ideas in a meaningful way.
  3. Design and produce media content with initiative and judgement that exemplifies professional standards and responds to a changing and dynamic media environment
  4. Evaluate and reflect critically on one’s professional and research development
  5. Plan and conduct independent scholarship and advanced critical reflection in a scholarly research project and/or media practice

Course structure

Completion of the Master of Strategic Communication requires 150 credit points including;

  • a core unit of 25 credit points
  • a specialisation of 25 credit points chosen from;
    1. Science Communication
    2. Arts, Events and Culture
    3. Public Relations
  • 100 credit points of Elective units

Students entering the course with a Bachelor's degree with Honours in a relevant discipline or substantial, relevant professional experience may be eligible for up to 50 credit points of credit towards Elective units

Entry requirements

We encourage you to apply for the courses you most want to study. If you’re not eligible to enter your chosen course right now, the University of Tasmania admissions team will work with you to find the best pathway option.

Entry into the Master’s degree requires:

A Bachelor’s degree with a credit average and a major or equivalent in journalism, media studies or communications or relevant disciplines as determined by the College, such as a Bachelor of Science or Marketing, or:

  • completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Strategic Communication, or;
  • work experience of at least three years in journalism, public relations, or event management, and related professions, including science communication or marketing.

Candidates for the Masters of Strategic Communication may be eligible for a reduction in the volume of learning of up to 50 credit points of Elective units if entering the course with the following background;

  • an Honours degree at Level 8 or higher in the Australian Qualifications Framework in journalism, media studies or communication;
  • professional experience in a relevant field equivalent to level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Students entering the course with a Bachelor's degree with Honours in a relevant discipline or substantial, relevant professional experience may be eligible for up to 50 credit points of credit towards Elective units

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Strategic Communication are eligible to articulate to the Master's degree with full credit.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in certain postgraduate coursework programs may not be eligible for student payments through Youth Allowance and Austudy. Visit the Department of Social Services website to find out more about eligibility for Centrelink support and the list of eligible courses
