Introduction

Students selected into one of the following: Faculty of Education Honours courses, B.Ed(Hons), B.Ed (Primary)(Hons), B.Ed (Early Childhood) (Hons) course will undertake this unit.
This unit aims to prepare and assist students in developing the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to undertake a substantial sustained piece of educational research. Students who complete this unit successfully will have: developed a thorough and detailed research proposal that outlines the research problem, provides an argument supported by relevant substantive theory, and details the research design; obtained ethical clearance from the relevant committees and authorities to undertake the research; developed a substantial and critical literature review that provides a coherent argument that supports the research investigation; planned data generation and data analysis relevant to the research design; planned and commenced the presentation of a substantial written report.

  • choose data analysis techniques appropriate for quantitative and/or qualitative data and be able to apply these appropriately in the context of undertaking a specific project
  • recognise and explain a range of ethical issues that arise in undertaking research in the social sciences, and the appropriate ways of addressing these within a research context
  • present verbal and written reports of research to academic and professional audiences
  • plan a piece of sustained scholarly research work and compile specific sections of the work within set timeframes
