Science as a Human Endeavour EPR305


Science is influenced by, and in turn influences the needs and priorities of society. It has a unique way of knowing and operating. However, science is not the only way of knowing. The process of science does not exist in isolation from other disciplines (e.g. other STEM disciplines) and due to its key role in addressing authentic complex and societal issues, it often also draws from and works with other disciplines (e.g. Social Sciences; Ethics; Arts – STEAM). In this unit, you will hone your scientific understanding, knowledge and skills and enhance your scientific view of the world. You will construct a scientific project which will enable you to learn more about how to conduct scientific research, how to engage with and answer relevant research questions, and to understand your selected area of science in depth. As your research question(s) will be authentic and realistic, your project will draw from other disciplines as appropriate (STEM/STEAM). In so doing you will also gain ‘epistemic insight’ into the various ways disciplines come to know and work together to solve authentic problems. You will research, plan and implement a science research project that is actionable in a primary classroom or a community.
