Introduction

This unit explores linguistics as an academic discipline and in particular its relevance to language learning and teaching. A central idea underpinning the unit is the role that language awareness plays in preparing language teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages. The unit includes an exploration of the following aspects of linguistics - sociolinguistics, psycho and neuro-linguistics; language descriptions and grammars; phonetics; phonology; morphology; syntax; semantics; pragmatics; discourse analysis; semiotics.
