Introduction

In this unit you will explore the impact of cultural change on the discipline of English.  You will investigate how English language, literacy and literature continue to change as a result of a range of emerging cultural phenomena such as:  new media and participatory practices of youth in online spaces; the rise of what has recently been termed 'the Golden Age of Retelling'; the impact of emergent theoretical approaches such as ecocriticism, multimodality and globalisation on the teaching of literature; and the continued impact of post-modernity on the English discipline.  A focus will be on how teachers might best equip young people with the social, cultural and critical literacy skills to become full participants in a changing world. You will have an opportunity to create a digital presentation about one aspect of the changing nature of English.
