Introduction
ESH360: Advanced Humanities and Social Sciences will extend your understanding of content and pedagogy beyond what you learned in the introductory unit, ESH260.
The Australian Curriculum learning area of Humanities and Social Sciences requires children from birth to Year 6 to think about and respond to key historical, geographical, political, economic and societal issues, and how these different factors interrelate.
The focus of this unit is on deepening your understanding around engaging teaching and learning strategies to integrate Humanities and Social Sciences and make connections with the Australian Curriculum's Cross-curriculum Priorities and General Capabilities (notably Literacy, Numeracy, Critical and Creative Thinking, and ICT). If you are an Early Childhood student you will address the relevant aspects of the Early Years Learning Framework. Emphasis will be on developing discipline-specific skills, key organising concepts, and active teaching approaches.Assessment tasks aim to broaden your knowledge of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and develop your skills of critical thinking. You will also be encouraged to use technologies that will re-imagine how History, Geography and Civics and Citizenship can be taught both in and beyond the classroom.

| Teaching Pattern | On-Campus students: Lecture: Online (Face to face in weeks 1 & 5), face-to-face tutorials (2 hours per week) The unit will be delivered through online lectures and podcasts, readings and activities making a total study commitment of approx 10 hours per week. You can also access the web conferences (which are timed to coincide with support for your assignment and exam). The unit coordinator will also deliver a face to face Lecture in week 5. Online students: The course is offered fully online. Students engage with the unit through weekly readings, tasks and discussions. You are expected to timetable 10 hours of study time per week, including time spent reading or viewing resources, searching for additional information/resources necessary for the completion of assessment tasks and other activities, and participating in weekly tasks and online discussions. |
