Introduction
Twenty first century education must meet the learning needs of communities and help to address twenty first century issues. As recognized by UNESCO and the new Australian Curriculum, education for sustainability is an important part of this process. Consequently, this unit will provide students with a broad introduction to education for sustainability. Initially, this unit explores social, economic, and environmental sustainability issues which impact both Australian and global contexts. Second, theoretical perspectives related to sustainability and education for sustainability will be introduced and examined. Finally, the place of sustainability as a cross-curricular priority in the Australian Curriculum will be explored along with implications for various learning areas.
