Introduction

This unit continues the work of Ensemble Skills 3. In the fourth semester students consolidate the processes already introduced through the preparation and performance of new repertoire. Students are expected to keep a rehearsal chart 'book'/journal that details the repertoire and strategies chosen throughout the semester in rehearsal to improve performance.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Through performance and rehearsal, consolidate musical ideas to aid in participation in a musically cohesive ensemble.
  2. Identify and internalise relevant information pertaining to repertoire and performance practice in a collaborative setting.
  3. Extend instrumental/vocal skills to participate in ensemble performance.
  4. Identify and reflect on knowledge and skills required within a group setting to define genre appropriate problems associated with ensemble music making.

Teaching Pattern

Semester 1 and 2: Large, and/or conducted ensembles: Weekly 3 hour rehearsals/coaching sessions (12 weeks) or Small ensembles: Weekly 2 hour ensemble performance class/scheduled rehearsals, minimum 6 x 1hr coaching sessions or as timetabled by ensemble directors.
Semester 3, 4 and 5: 3-day weekends of sectionals and rehearsals totaling on average 20-30 hrs or as timetabled by ensemble directors.

Task 2: Semester performances of prepared repertoire (50%)
