Introduction
This unit explores approaches to art practice and the body using a range of creative methods. From painting to sculpture, photography to performance art, ideas about the body have been part of the creative expression of many cultures. You will consider the reasons for the re-emergence of the figurative genre in the postmodern and explore various philosophical approaches to the body using practical studio approaches augmented by lectures establishing a history and current context.
Through art, the body becomes a site for exploring anatomy including the interior and exterior, construction of gender ideas and individual identity, the impact of technologies on how the body is imagined and experimenting with the nature of representation itself.
Students are expected to be self-motivated and develop a significant folio comprising artworks which may include drawing, painting, photography, performance, textiles, ceramics and other three dimensional constructions. This folio will be supported by supported by a portfolio of documentation of experimentation/exploration, reflection and responses to ideas raised in class and personal research.
