Introduction

Exhibitions are not only a way to present creative works. They are also a way to make meaning, generate ideas and communicate with an audience. This unit will present key contemporary, historical, philosophical and cultural debates and guide you through ways to describe and analyse them using curatorial approaches.

The unit will introduce curatorial practice as both a mode of creative expression as well as critique and outline professional practice exemplars and industry guidelines including WHS considerations. You will be asked to explore and define critical cultural contexts that are relevant to creative practice (your own and others) using research, writing, presentation, making, critique and reflection.

The assessment tasks will integrate different forms of communication including oral presentation and discussion, project planning, writing and making. You will have to opportunity to test ideas for an exhibition and consider the interplay of text and design in exhibition catalogues.

Weekly (3 hour) session comprised typically of a lecture and tutorial with an expectation of an additional 3 hours independent work. (13 weeks, including an independent study week).
