Introduction
This practical unit will develop your skills in perceptual, conceptual, procedural and imaginary models of drawing. You will undertake a suite of practical exercises and projects that emphasise innovative self-expression and conceptually informed and intuitive creative approaches to drawing. Hand made drawings processes involve various 2D surfaces and occasionally may consider drawing in relation to digital media, 3D, and/or time based media.
The purpose of this unit is to provide you with methods, concepts and practical skills for generating new ideas and ways of thinking through drawing practice. Through exploratory practice and the development of research and studio skills, as well as the study of histories, theories and practices of the discipline, you will develop a studio practice where the making of drawings is deeply embedded and informed by the ideas behind them.
Artist talks, lectures, class presentations, group discussion and critique will support practical work. These and other class activities encourage positive and productive dialogue within a supportive class culture. They will also build ability in identifying, describing and communicating (written and oral) the principles and forms of drawing and your knowledge of contemporary drawing practice.
The unit is designed to prepare students for advanced level subjects in visual art.
