Introduction
This unit provides further development in object and furniture design. It reflects a commitment to craft skills necessary for contemporary maker-designers while also exploring the role of design as a critical practice and way of thinking within a world already filled with objects.
In particular, this unit explores various structures that offer support to the human form, from everyday items like chairs through to more speculative design approaches. You will interrogate, critically analyse and evaluate pre-existing notions of structure to make individual responses capable of disrupting conventional norms. Core knowledge is further built by introducing a range of intermediate making processes and skills across a range of mediums.
This unit encompasses a combination of collaborative, individual, observational and live presentation activities. Further skills that delve into methods of reuse, repair, adaptation and manipulation of materials are incorporated as students undertake iterative processes such as models, mock-ups and experimental prototypes or interventions.
You will engage with the design and development of supporting structures through design brief/s, lectures, demonstrations, studios, workshops, tutorials, discussion or presentations that span historical, traditional, theoretical, technological and current approaches to making processes. Instruction and compliance to workplace health and safety (WHS) is fundamental to this unit.
