Introduction

Painting is a vital and exciting medium that continues to fascinate artists and audiences. This unit is suited to students interested in contemporary art and who wish to learn the foundations of painting practice. By undertaking this unit, you will gain an understanding of painting and its place within visual culture, exploring new forms of painting as well as its rich and enduring history. You will undertake a series of exercises, and two set projects, as your teachers, guide you through traditional techniques and new approaches to painting practice. This will provide you with essential skills that you can then experiment with and develop further within the projects. You will also be encouraged to explore a range of painting media and ways of creating imagery. Your learning will be enhanced and extended through critical discussion and contextual research.
