Introduction
This unit investigates Art as a meeting point for exchange between Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures. Through analysis of the process, materials and context of Artworks the dialogue between cultures will be explored.
The unit will build skills in critical and material thinking and sensitivity to cultural differences. Students will investigate and consider methods and materials of making and how these reveal cultural structures of thinking and cross-cultural exchanges. Through a program of gallery visits and case studies students will develop methods of negotiating objects. In keeping with the objectives of the course, students are required to choose an art object as the focus of their study. This may comprise a work of art or design in any medium
Students will be encouraged and supported to respond creatively and analytically to artworks through writing, drawing and making. For the unit you will be guided in initiating and realizing a project which could be realized through art, poetry or writing.
Project work is supported by demonstrations, individual and group exercises, workshops and group critiques. Journal work is central to project development and you are required to keep a record of your ideas, insights, concepts, methods and learning processes and contextualizes these through study of forms and innovative examples of practice.
