This unit provides an understanding of the roles and status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in Australia. It considers how colonisation has affected the cultural roles of women and examines a range of contemporary social issues related to Indigenous women (including justice, employment, caring for Country/land rights, rights and activism, political representation, creative and artistic output/recognition).

Teaching Pattern

On Campus: 1 x 1 hour lecture weekly, and 1 x 1 hour tutorial weekly (13 weeks);

Off Campus: 1 x 1 hour recorded lecture and online learning module per week (13 weeks)


On-campus: 1000-word essay (15%), tutorial discussion participation and short presentation on one of the weekly topics (10%), 2000-word essay (35%), 2-hour exam (40%)

Off-campus:  1000-word essay (20%), 2000-word essay (40%), 2-hour exam (40%)
