Introduction

We often hear that media industries are in decline.  However, as this unit will demonstrate, what we are actually seeing is a profound reshaping of new and old media industries in response to shifts in the media landscape.  In this unit you will examine the history, evolution, and proliferation of media industries including print, radio, music, advertising, film, and television.  You will engage with key concepts in the discipline of media studies such as convergence, globalisation, and media ownership, and will gain foundational skills in media analysis and research.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of key theories and concepts associated with media and screen industries in Australia and internationally.
  2. Describe and analyse methods used by Australian and international media and screen industries to produce and circulate content
  3. Demonstrate skills in academic and media research, as appropriate for level 100.
  4. Critically evaluate your own social and cultural subject position in relation to media and screen texts and industries.
