Introduction

This unit introduces you to the complex and diverse relationships between media texts and audiences. You will engage with key theories in audience studies and explore a range of topics including media effects, citizen journalism, children’s media, and fan cultures. The unit will provide you with a strong foundation in media analysis, challenge you to rethink what it means to ‘be’ an audience, and encourage you to explore the relationship between media and social change.

  1. Describe key debates about the effect of media content on audiences, and engage with these debates in an informed and critical manner.
  2. Discuss the use, sharing, reimagining, and creation of media material by audiences.
  3. Analyse media texts with awareness of the way audiences are addressed, positioned, and constructed.

On-campus students:

1 x 60 minute lecture in Week 1

90 minute seminar weekly, beginning week 2

Weekly online content including short video lectures

Distance students:

1 x 60 minute lecture in Week 1 (recorded and available online)

Online engagement, including weekly online discussions, activities, and short video lectures.

Assessment
