Introduction

This unit explores the relationship between contemporary communications technologies and practices, and social and environmental change. Students will develop their understanding of, and practical skills in, the use of media for advocating for change. Students will examine the communication and media practices of a range of local and international, political and civil society campaigns, which may include NGOs, advocacy organisations and protest movements. The unit includes a field trip.

Teaching Pattern: 39 hours, taught face-to-face in Hobart and online.

5 x 1hr online lecture, 2x 2hr evening face-face workshops, 2x all day field trips, and 2 x long day face-to-face workshops

Assessment

8,000 words or equivalent internal assessment comprising:

Critical essay (20%)

Pitch of communications concept (30%)

Practical media production or professional strategic communications plan (50%)
