Australian Literature HEN314


This unit will consider major authors and texts, developments and trends in Australian Literature. It examines Australian literature as a regional, national, and international literature with a set of distinct and vibrant cultures. Students will consider the histories, preoccupations, and functions of literature within Australian culture, and topics studied may include: the literary response to place and landscape; colonialism and postcolonialism; class, race and gender; the evolution of Australian literary culture; contemporary developments in Australian writing; and the relationship of fiction, theatre, and poetry to national history.

Teaching Pattern

On Campus: 5 contact hours fortnightly (13 weeks)

Off Campus: Online (13 weeks)


5,500 words or equivalent of assessment including:
-      Online Discussion Exercises and Short Essay (2000 words, 30%)
-     Digital Narrative Project (3-5 minute audio-visual presentation, script + 800 word reflection piece, 30%);
Research Project (2000 words, 40%); and
Short Essay (1500 words, 30%)
