Social Work Theories, Values and Frameworks for 21st Century Practice HGW302

Hobart

Introduction

This unit explores how social work theory and practice inter-relate as a basis for defining the purpose and practice of social work. It presents a construct of social work as planned change which is done with care, in consideration of contexts, and by practitioners reflecting on their use of power. Students consider relationships between theory and practice and examine issues, problems and dilemmas that confront social workers in their daily practice. In doing so, they will also analyse the relation of theory to values, attitudes, beliefs and practice in social work. The process of critical reflection will be used to develop an ethical framework of practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • articulate a theoretically informed and ethical framework for social work practice that clearly identifies the relationship between change, care (the ethics and values of change), contexts and power to define the purpose, scope and practices of social work.
  • explain and demonstrate how social workers can address cultural contexts as a core component of their frameworks for practice to help define what needs to change and how such change can occur with care and by being reflective of the use of power.
  • apply a theoretically informed and ethical practice framework in social work assessments that could support achieving socially just change in the lives of people in interpersonal, institutional and other socio-political contexts.
  • demonstrate the qualities of a critically reflective social worker by critically evaluating how your framework for practice could help or hinder the achievement of social work goals in social work interventions; and whether your framework for practice reflects social work ethics and values.
