Social Work Practicum 1 HGW303

Restricted to the Bachelor of Social Work.

Prior to the commencement of placement, attendance will be required at scheduled seminars, workshops and an interview held on campus in Semester 1. There are compulsory Preparation for Placement seminars in March, April and June. Placement starts in July of each year.

Police check required in Semester 1 for each year that a Professional Education Placement is undertaken. Students are also asked to provide a Working with Children Check. In accordance with the University of Tasmania Safe to Practice Policy and Work Health and Safety Policy, students are also required to sign a 'Safe to Practice Agreement' in Semester 1 regarding their medical, physical and psychological capacity to practice safely on placement and without adverse impact on themselves, professional colleagues or clients.

The unit - HGW308 Working in Organisational and Legal Settings is a co-requisite unit for students undertaking this fieldwork placement.

Introduction

Social Work Practicum 1 is a cornerstone unit in the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Social Work Professional and Research Honours degrees. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 500 hours of placement in a setting that is relevant to social work practice in order to experience a range of practice tasks.

A Field educator is allocated to each student and through supervision (provided by a social worker with a minimum of 2 years full time equivalent post graduation experience in the field) the theory of social work is translated into practice. Students will be required to attend preparation seminars and a placement interview prior to commencing placement.

Full-time placements are undertaken over a period of 14 weeks.

Teaching Pattern

Students undertake 500 hours of placement (minimum) in a setting that is relevant to social work practice. Placements are undertaken on a full time basis. In some circumstances part time placements may be negotiated, subject to availability. Full time placements are undertaken over a period of 16 weeks. Students will also be required to attend preparation seminars and a field education placement interview in Semester 1.Special Note:There are compulsory Preparation for Placement seminars in March, April and June. Placement starts in July of each year.

Assessment

Continuous evaluation of student performance by the Field Educator. At mid placement and at the end of placement, student, field educator and liaison staff (from the School of Social Sciences, Social Work Program at the University) formally evaluate student performance based on the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Practice Standards 2013 and the AASW Code of Ethics 2010.
