This unit examines the concepts, principles and practices of effective communication with focus on oral intervention tactics to de-escalate and resolve conflict in a variety of contexts. It provides direct practice skills in negotiation and conflict management techniques appropriate when communicating with individuals and groups - including those affected by alcohol and drugs and by mental illnesses, as well as those from non-English speaking backgrounds and those threatening or attempting suicide. In addition, knowledge and skills in the use of enabling technologies for critical incident and emergency responses such a police radio, telephone and computer systems, local and national data bases are demonstrated and practiced. The relationship between police and the media is also explored. Integrity principles and issues when dealing with sensitive and personal information are examined.
