Social Conflict Resolution B HSP234


This unit provides knowledge and direct practice of operational conflict management strategies and defensive and restraining tactics used in police interventions to de-escalate and resolve conflictual situations in a variety of contexts. "Use of force" principles and concepts - including the "reasonable force equation" and the "force continuum" - are examined. Tactical options and risk assessment measures used when approaching, restraining, searching and detaining suspects and offenders - including those who are violent and/or drug/alcohol intoxicated and those who are situated in an intercepted motor vehicle - are taught. Integrity issues associated with the "excessive use of force" are analysed.

  • You will understand the concepts of de-escalation and the force continuum and be able to identify and interpret the legislation, policy and procedures that provide the relevant guidance and apply this to your practice.
  • You will be proficient at using a range of skills to avoid confrontation and conflict.
  • You will be able to recognise risk to yourself and others and apply appropriate strategies to reduce that risk.
  • You will understand the link between theory and practice, and draw on a range of theories and knowledge to reflect on and refine their practice.
  • You will demonstrate a growing understanding of how the values of integrity, accountability and equity are, and can be, embedded in practice.
  • You will be able to identify the relevant accountability measures, eg: reporting, locate the sources of guidance for these measures and apply this guidance to the required procedures and the production of accurate and reliable records.
  • Communicate knowledge and research/investigation related to the subject matter in an ePortfolio (eWorkbook).
