3rd year core unit for Police Studies major in BSocSc(Police Studies) degree, conventional pathway
Introduction
This unit examines major issues concerning contemporary policing practices including such topics as policing hate crime, policing public order and dissent, cross-border policing, policing illicit drug use, policing domestic violence, and policing in a post 9/11 climate. Crime management strategies and forensic practices will also be examined. Case material will be drawn from Australian and international policing contexts. This unit is an advanced policing unit focused on elaborating the difficult and complex issues impacting on policing work in the contemporary context. Students will critically engage with some of the more wicked problems of policing, often involving many intersecting ethical and human rights issues in police decision making, and often leading to very serious outcomes for police, victims, and offenders. This unit will present a range of police practices upon which to reflect, in order to critically analyse the work of contemporary police in Australia and overseas.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge about social, cultural, historical, and ethical factors impacting on policing practices and understanding transformation movements and trends in policing.
