Introduction

This unit provides advanced level knowledge and direct practice skills used in police interventions to resolve conflictual situations with individuals and groups. Focus is placed on the appropriate use of restraint and control accoutrements including expandable batons, oleoresin capsicum spray, firearms and ballistic vests. Risk management measures and integrity considerations associated with the use of these accoutrements - including the controversial debate about the so-called militarization of policing - are analysed and assessed.
Critical reflection by teachers and yourself on your performance in individual and group simulations, role-plays and scenarios will occur in a learning climate that aims to engage, support and encourage you in your learning about this critical aspect of professional policing.
