Introduction
Police are expected to be ethical, diverse thinking leaders both within their own sphere of command and within their community. They ensure a safe working environment in their management of police human resources, whilst also building capability, modelling inclusivity and respect, being emotionally intelligent, and engaging in reflective practice. They are required to exercise effective strategic judgement and decision making, and apply critical thinking and problem solving skills, to influence police practice and policy in innovative, creative ways. Police leaders contribute to and implement strategic organisational change and influence police policy.
This unit engages students in the higher order leadership and engagement skills for policing in an increasingly complex social, cultural, and economic environment. Students will engage with assignment work grounded in critical reflection and leadership theories in ways that will synthesise their performance and the issues facing police today.
