This unit will examine the dynamics of convict societies and their legacies; the contests for land; the place of gender relations in shaping everyday life and political movements; Eureka, the goldfields and struggles for democracy; the growth of cities; the development of White Australia; working class politics; and the growth of nationalism in the late nineteenth century.
