Introduction
It was said that ‘the sun never sets on the British Empire’. This unit explores the origins, growth, and difficult afterlife of the British Empire from the 18th century until the present. It has a particular focus on the colonisation of the Atlantic world, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific (including Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand). The unit takes a thematic approach including, for example, trade in bodies and goods, conflict over land and its resources, print capitalism, mapping and city planning, and collecting and displaying Empire. It also considers processes of decolonisation for those who became imperial subjects.
