Australia 1901 to 2001 HTA307

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.


Examines patterns of change and continuity, and conflict and consensus in Australia from federation to 2001. Topics include nation building to 1914; the first world war, progressivism in the 1920s; Australia and the world depression in the 1930s; the second world war and its implications for Australia; economic and social transformations of the late 1940s and 50s, especially the impact of Menzies, communism and migration; the impact of the Vietnam war; exploration of the 1960s protest movements involving women, Aborigines, and the Greens; the achievements of the Whitlam government; and an overview of major developments of the late twentieth century.

Hobart:        2 lectures weekly, 1 tutorial fortnightly


On Campus: 3,000-word essay (40%), 500 word minor assignment (10%), tutorial participation (10%), 2-hr exam (40%).

Off Campus:
3,000-word essay (40%), 500 word minor assignment (10%), 2-hr exam (40%), On-line Participation (10%).
